One other way I've seen for making sure a blog matters (or is it blogs that matter that do this?) is to run crowdsourcing exercises (helps if you're working on a bigger project, like a book). Tyler Cowen at MarginalRevolution.com or Grant McCracken at CultureBy.com do it pretty well. Okay, I guess they're applying the For God's Sake, Ask rule...

Yes, you definitely hit a nerve, Justin. Great post.

Suckage reason #4 is definitely an easy trap to fall into; good to be reminded about that.

Great ideas and way to lay it out there. I am working on several of these ideas on my blog and I am glad to see posts that validate that.
Thanks!

Thanks for all the feedback, folks. Glad to hear I hit a nerve, and happy to see it's causing people to think about WHY they're doing what they're doing.

Michael: I keep intending to install Disqus here, but I haven't pulled the trigger yet. Thanks for the reminder.

Tobias: I think relevance and "mattering" are the driving force behind any art, from blogs to music and beyond. Sure, some people just want to experiment with a form, but if you're going to invest for the long haul, you have to have a more personal connection to it or else you'll always find reasons not to keep pushing forward.

Kathleen: You're right, and I've realized I forgot to clarify my last point -- your blog (or work) doesn't need to be ALL of those things I suggested in order to matter in a significant way, but it should incorporate SOME of those techniques. I'm sure people could find ways to do them all, but not every blog requires it. Plus, if everyone adopted all the techniques at once, our amazing new blogs would all look amazingly alike. ;)

Great post. And I must admit, I would not pay to read my blog -- at least not yet!

Thank you for cutting through a lot of schtuff. It's great to read a clear and concise voice helping others to obtain the same! My only hesitation is with #4 - I'm not sure it's achievable for everyone reading this, nor necessary to be an iconoclast or a trendsetter in order to matter.

I think we're better off just knowing & being ourselves rather than contemplating how to defy convention or set trends. And as soon as a trendsetter rests, those who follow trends go elsewhere. As the American actress Ruth Gordon once said, "To be someone you must last."

Great blog post - I shall retweet and repost on FB.

Just the kick in the hind quarters we all need from time to time.

I teach a NO RULES approach to blogs and social media. Use as you wish.. but when I see someone crank out crap I think of how this "digital tatoo" will be around for ever.

If we are passionate about sharing and caring our blogs will show it. "Listen and Love" will be the new way of doing business. If you pay attention to the conversation and respond as best you can, you will have a leg up in the future.
