I liked Detroit. As you say, there's an air of determination, roll-up-your-sleeves pride there. That said, I wonder if it's advertising the city needs? Winnipeg, Manitoba blew a quarter million dollars on an advertising campaign two years ago that netted the city nothing but a few banners on high rises... In Winnipeg. City advertising is often lame.

I think Rock City would benefit from its industry stepping up a little. Worst case, they bill themselves as being the gateway to the per-capita capitol of strip clubs in the western hemisphere, Windsor Ontario.

Thank you, Justin. It hurts my heart when people so cavalierly say "Detroit this" and "Detroit that" in a pejorative tone and dismiss an entire region as not worth worrying about because "they did it to themselves".
The auto industry is NOT all that Detroit is any more than the Congress is all that Washington DC is, and the people who live there - and those who are hurting in Flint, my hometown, and the rest of Michigan - do not deserve to be written off as undeserving of assistance because of where they happen to live.

Detroit! At least we're not Beirut!

But Seriously, Pittsburgh made a herculean climb from industrial wasteland to information / intellectual property based economy - and improved the western PA region.

Detroit doesn't need an advertising campaign, it needs an overhaul. New leaders, new tax structure, better education system, new opportunities and new mindset. The ethos that built this country - community by community - has been lost from Detroit, and replaced with nanny-state lethargy.

Ending political corruption would help too, but that would be part of finding new leadership.

Or, we could sell it to Canada...
